product details

Canon K35 Primes are legendary, high-performance, full-frame spherical lenses rehoused by Zero Optik. Renowned for their vintage character, they deliver painterly imperfection and a nostalgic feel to modern productions. The set includes five focal lengths of 18mmโ€“85mm, with separate but exceptionally well matched Canon FDโ€™s and K35 Zoom offering additional spectacular focal length options. They have been color matched and remain very consistent across the rental sets. Focal lengths include 18mm, 24mm, 35mm, 55mm, 85mm, covering everything from wides to telephoto portraits. Many filmmakers choose to combine various Canon FD focal lengths to extend the set. The 180mm Leica Cine T2, exclusive to Cine Visuals, is also a great telephoto option. Rehousing by Zero Optik into modern PL-mount designs has ensured continued desirability and relevance of K35s in contemporary cinema. Zero Optik-rehoused K35 lenses are available to rent or sub-rent from Cine Visuals in full sets, partial sets, or as single lenses.

Image Fidelity & Focus

K35s are famous for their dreamy yet cinematic rendering. With unique bokeh, painterly skin tones and smooth focus fall-off, they have lower contrast compared to modern lenses and produce beautiful purple and orange flares. Contrast is moderate, with an organic warmth that flatters skin tones. Sharpness is present at the center but softens gently toward the edges, creating a painterly halo effect. Focus falloff is pronounced and highly cinematic, giving subjects strong separation.

Handling & Adaptability

Rehoused K35 lenses have become an industry standard due to their superb mechanics, ergonomics and reliability. Originally compact and lightweight, K35s in rehoused form gain robust mechanics, geared focus/aperture rings, and uniform fronts, making them reliable in modern production. They remain lighter than many contemporary primes, making them excellent for Steadicam and handheld rigs.

Flare & Bokeh

Flares are bold and expressive, often streaking across the frame in warm tones that enhance dramatic imagery. Chromatic aberration is visible at wide apertures but adds to the character. Bokeh is rounded and buttery, with a natural swirl at times, contributing to their romantic quality.

Image Circle

A 43mm image circle allows most focal lengths to achieve full frame coverage, including Mini LF, Sony Venice, and RED Monstro sensors. (The 18mm is an exception โ€“ it only covers up to LF UHD 16X9 4K.)

Cinematic Heritage

The Canon K35 primes are among the most sought-after vintage cine lenses. Originally introduced in the 1970s to compete with Zeiss and Cooke, their technical sophistication earned them a 1977 Academy Award for Scientific and Engineering Achievement. Standout credits include Barry Lyndon, Manchester by the Sea, Aliens, There Will Be Blood and American Hustle.
