About the Canon K35 25-120mm Zoom Cinema Lens
The Canon K35 25-120mm T2.8 is a vintage cinema zoom that extends the optical character of the K35 prime series into a variable focal length format. It maintains the same warm color rendering, lower contrast, and smooth highlight roll-off that define K35 primes, while providing greater flexibility across a wider focal range.
Covering 25mm to 120mm with a constant T2.8 aperture, it allows cinematographers to move between wide and telephoto framing without changing lenses. The built-in macro capability further expands its use for close-focus work. Often paired with K35, FD, or FD-X primes, it is used to maintain a consistent vintage look across both zoom and prime setups.
ย
Image Fidelity & Focus
Focus is sharp wide open, and the fast T2.8 aperture applies over the entire focal range. Fall-off is distinctive and the image is described as creamy. Close focus is 4 feet. With a separate macro focusing ring, the need for diopters is eliminated, and the extended close focus range comes within inches of the front element.
Handling & Adaptability
Front diameter is 136mm. Weight is 11.8 pounds. PL mount.
Flare & Bokeh
Large lens elements and vintage multi-layer coatings result in easy, big flaring, which emphasizes amber and magenta colors. Bokeh is gorgeous and textured, especially wide open and with the internal baffle removed, and the 15-blade iris maintains circular bokeh shape at any T-stop.
Image Circle
The Canon K35 25-120mm T2.8 Macro zoom is designed to cover 35mm film, and will vignette slightly on ARRI Alexa Mini and Alexa 35 in OpenGate.
Cinematic Heritage
Introduced in 1970, the Canon K35 25-120mm T2.8 was the first zoom with a macro function for improved close focus. Canon collaborated with AMPTP Research Center on the development of the lens.
