Lomo Super Speeds
Prime - Spherical - Super 35
product details
The Lomo Super Speeds are Soviet-made spherical primes from the 1970s and 1980s. The top of the line at that time, they were designed as fast, affordable alternatives to Western glass. These rehousings by GL Optics offer a unique Soviet-era aesthetic in a vastly improved, modern cine shell. They produce lower contrast, moderate, flattering sharpness, and a characteristic vintage glow wide open, sharpening when stopped down. Their vintage personality is often chosen for stylized narrative films, music videos, and experimental projects where imperfections โ edge softness, flare, and aberration โ are embraced as part of a distinctive cinematic voice. Focal lengths are 18mm, 22mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 75mm, 100mm, and 150mm. Pair these lenses with the K35 Zoom for similar character in a variable focal length option. Available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

About the Lomo Super Speed Cinema Lenses
Lomo Super Speeds are vintage Soviet spherical primes valued for their fast apertures and distinctly expressive rendering. They produce lower contrast images with moderate central sharpness, noticeable edge falloff, and a characteristic glow when shot wide open, creating a soft, atmospheric look that sharpens as the lenses are stopped down.
Rehoused by GL Optics, they retain their original optical character while gaining reliable modern mechanics for professional use. Their look emphasizes warmth, texture, and imperfection, with visible aberrations and flare that contribute to a stylized, analog aesthetic. Often chosen for narrative, music video, and experimental work, they offer a strong visual identity that contrasts clean, contemporary optics.
ย
Image Fidelity & Focus
Lomo Super Speeds are characterized by low contrast, moderate central sharpness, and spectacular falloff toward the edges. Wide open, they bloom highlights and produce dreamlike images. Stopped down, they sharpen considerably while retaining vintage warmth and exceptional skin tones. Colors lean warm, and aberrations are significant but part of their character.
Handling & Adaptability
Among the vastly improved mechanics making them reliable for set use, the GL Optics housings provide buttery smooth 330 degree focus, allowing for accurate and minor adjustment, along with PL mounts, cine-standard gearing, and robust mechanics. Their small size makes them attractive for handheld and gimbal shooting.
Flare & Bokeh
Flares are bold and stylized โ gorgeous at wide open, often producing dramatic and colorful veiling and streaking. Bokeh is textured, swirly and chaotic, particularly at wider focal lengths, enhancing the expressive character.

Cinematic Heritage
Developed during the Cold War, Lomo Super Speeds were Soviet cinemaโs answer to Zeiss Super Speeds. While not as technically refined, they offered fast apertures at affordable cost, making them widely used in Soviet and Eastern European cinema. Rediscovered in the 2010s, they became popular for their expressive flaws.
