About the Nikon AI Zoom-Nikkor 50-300mm ED Cinema Lens
The Nikon AI Zoom-Nikkor 50-300mm f/4.5 ED is a six-times telephoto zoom that Nikon released in May 1977, here fitted with a PL mount for cinema cameras. In Nikonโs original design, the first lens group stays fixed while zooming, and an ED element in that group reduces axial chromatic aberration, the weakness of earlier 50-300mm zooms at the long end. The overall length also stays constant through the zoom range, with less shift in the center of gravity than the earlier version.

Image Fidelity & Focus
Nikonโs own testing of the original lens found a very sharp image center at maximum aperture, no noticeable chromatic aberration, little flare, and good contrast. Nikon reports barrel distortion at 50mm that is almost gone by 70mm, and pincushion distortion that can be noticeable from 135mm to 300mm.
Handling & Adaptability
Weighing 4.85 lbs (2.20 kg) and measuring 9.72 inches (247mm) long, the lens delivers a six-times, 50-300mm zoom range in a package under 5 lbs. Nikonโs original design keeps the overall length constant through the zoom range and shifts the center of gravity less than the earlier version of the lens, so balance holds steady as you zoom. The PL mount fits standard cinema cameras.
Flare & Bokeh
Nikonโs testing found little flare and good contrast. White ghosting can appear at 200-300mm with partial backlighting, and Nikon says a hood or flag addresses it. Out-of-focus backgrounds render soft and natural.

Cinematic Heritage
Nikonโs 50-300mm f/4.5 zoom began in 1967 with the Zoom-Nikkor Auto, which Nikon calls the beginning of high-power zoom lenses. The AI Zoom-Nikkor ED version, designed by Yutaka Iizuka and released in May 1977, added an ED element to correct the long-end chromatic aberration of earlier versions. Nikon says it gained popularity as a high-performance zoom comparable to prime lenses and changed the general impression of high-power zooms. Nikon reworked it in 1982 as the lighter AI-S version.
