About the Canon K35
The Canon K35 is a set of 1970s vintage spherical cinema lenses known for their warm color rendering, lower contrast, and smooth, organic image quality. Originally introduced by Canon as the K-35 series and later rehoused by True Lens Services (TLS), the Canon K35 prime set pairs vintage optics with cinema-grade mechanics.
Canon K35 lenses are particularly valued for their gentle focus falloff, creamy skin tones, and distinctive bokeh, often producing subtle flare with gold, amber, or purple hues. Despite their vintage origins, many focal lengths in the set cover Full Frame, which keeps them in active use on current digital cinema cameras. With compact size, fast T-stops, and consistent mechanics across the set, the Canon K35 is widely used in narrative and commercial work where a softer, more cinematic image is preferred over clinical sharpness.
Image Fidelity & Focus
Thanks to aspherical designs, K35s are among the best-performing vintage lenses. Focus fall-off is gentle, transition from light to shadow is subtle, skin tones are pastel, color rendition is warm and the look is often described as dreamy and appealing.
Flare & Bokeh
The unique K35 flare characteristics produce gold, orange, amber or purple hues and distinctive patterns. Bokeh is consistently soft and circular due to a 15-blade iris.
Handling & Adaptability
All focal lengths offer 330 degree focus throw, matching 110mm fronts, and matching positions for the focus and iris gears. The TLS rehousing process improves the mechanics of the K35s, making them more robust and user-friendly, and in some cases, improving close focus over original housings.
Image Circle
Unusual for vintage glass, the Canon K35s cover full frame, with the exception of the 18mm. (The full frame Canon FD-X 18mm makes a perfect substitute.) The standard K35 set (18, 25, 35, 50 or 55, and 85mm) can be augmented by the vintage Canon FD 14mm-200mm and FD-X primes, which extend versatility and match the K35 look well. The Yashica 45mm prime also matches beautifully and is often added to complete a full set.
Cinematic Heritage
Originally manufactured in the 1970s and โ80s, Canon K35s were rehoused by TLS in London, setting the industry standard for quality lens rehousing. K35s were used on cinematographic landmarks like Aliens (Adrian Biddle, BSC), Barry Lyndon (John Alcott, BSC), American Hustle (Linus Sandgren, ASC, FSF), and Her (Hoyte Van Hoytema). K35s won an Academy Award for optical design in 1977.
