Lomo Square Front Anamorphic
Prime - 2x Anamorphic - Super 35
product details
The Lomo Square Front anamorphic primes, built in the Soviet Union in the 1960s and 1970s, are iconic lenses celebrated for their bold, vintage character. They are sought after for classic anamorphic traits when projects that call for an authentic, raw and nostalgic aesthetic reminiscent of 1970s cinema. The โSquare Frontโ nickname derives from their distinctive front housing shape. They come in three focal lengths, each with 2x squeeze: 35mm, 50mm and 75mm. Available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

Lomo Square Front Anamorphic
Image Fidelity & Focus
Square Fronts are legendary for their heavy character. They produce strong oval bokeh, shallow depth of field, heavy horizontal flares, and dramatic barrel and edge distortion that enhances cinematic scope, particularly at wider focal lengths. The anamorphic element at the front of the lens assembly contributes to noticeable lens breathing and dynamic focus shifts, enhancing the character of the shot. Sharpness is moderate at best, with strong edge softness. Contrast is low, creating a hazy, dreamy look. Chromatic aberrations are common, particularly at wide apertures. Focus falloff is abrupt, and backgrounds warp dramatically, producing a vintage, psychedelic aesthetic.
Handling & Adaptability
These lenses were heavy, inconsistent, and mechanically unreliable in their original builds. They range from T2.4 to T2.8 and weigh from 3.2 to 4 pounds.
Flare & Bokeh
Bokeh is strong and oval, and horizontal flaring can be quirky, soft, dramatic and beautiful, sometimes with a purple or blue tinge.
Image Circle
Featuring a 2x squeeze factor and a 31.3mm image circle, they cover Super 35. The lenses offer a distinctive 2.25:1 ratio, delivering a wide cinematic aspect.
Cinematic Heritage
Originally produced in the Soviet Union by the Leningrad Optical-Mechanical Association (LOMO), Lomo Square Fronts were the Eastern Blocโs answer to Panavision and CinemaScope anamorphics. Initially used in Russian cinema, they became cult favorites in the West after the fall of the USSR, prized for their expressive flaws.
