Image Fidelity & Focus
Sumire primes produce flattering skin tones, pleasing flare, and controlled contrast. Contrast eases and micro-aberrations bloom subtly near maximum T, yielding smooth falloff. Color leans slightly warm, with a unified tone across the set. Stopped down, sharpness and acutance snap to a more neutral image. Image fidelity remains high across the frame on full-frame sensors, with minimal breathing. Soft, warm and dimensional.
Handling & Adaptability
Compatible with the latest full-frame and Super 35mm PL-mount cameras from leading manufacturers. Consistent mechanics aid focus pulls and lens swaps on setโidentical 114 mm fronts and matched gear positions make matte boxes and motors painless. Focus rotation is a generous ~300ยฐ, breathing is well controlled, and weights cluster around 1.1โ1.4 kg depending on focal length, keeping rigs agile for handheld, gimbal, and drone work. Close-focus distances range from 0.2โ1.0m depending on focal length, supporting intimate coverage.
Flare & Bokeh
Unique optical design introduces a nuanced look as the lens aperture approaches its maximum setting, smoothing the transition to the fall-off portions of the scene and resulting in a graceful, round, pleasing bokeh. An 11-bladed iris and bright T-stops produce a more natural and circular bokeh from maximum to minimum aperture. The use of an odd number of iris blades also helps to diffuse light rays and produce what is generally considered a more cinematic look. Flare is distinct and pleasing, but controlled when pointed at sources.
Image Circle
With a 43.3 mm image circle and PL mounts (convertible to EF), Sumire primes pair well with full-frame and Super 35 cinema cameras from multiple manufacturers.
Cinematic Heritage
Canonโs Sumire Primes are the companyโs first set of prime PL-mount lenses. Pronounced โSoo-mee-ray,โ the word is of Japanese origin and is associated with floral gentleness and beauty.
