Cooke Panchro/i Classic S35
Image Fidelity & Focus
The Panchro/i Classics deliver gentle contrast and moderate sharpness, intentionally avoiding the hyper-resolution of modern glass. They resolve enough detail for 4K, 6K, and 8K capture, but maintain a soft roll-off that flatters skin and brings a filmic texture to digital cinematography. The hallmark Cooke Look is present throughout โ warm, natural colors with smooth tonal transitions and flattering reproduction of skin tones. Images feel organic rather than clinical. Depth of field transitions are gradual, with a characteristic painterly falloff that gives images dimension. Focus breathing is present but controlled, contributing to the vintage character.
Handling & Adaptability
Panchro/i Classic S35 lenses are built with consistent mechanics across the set, featuring 110mm front diameters and 270ยฐ focus rotation. Weights range from 1.5 to 3.2 kg (3 to 7 lbs) depending on focal length, making them lighter and more agile than many modern cinema primes, and suitable for Steadicam, handheld, or drone applications. Each lens comes in PL mount and incorporates Cooke /i Technology for metadata transmission.
Flare & Bokeh
The coatings allow for evocative flares without excessive veiling, often producing golden or rainbow-like streaks. Chromatic aberration is subtle and most noticeable in extreme backlight, adding character without distraction. Out-of-focus areas are smooth and creamy, with a round, pleasing bokeh. Highlights blur softly, creating an intimate rendering that separates subjects without harshness.
Image Circle
Designed for Super 35 sensors, they cover the traditional cinema format and pair seamlessly with cameras like the ARRI Alexa Mini, Sony F55, or RED Helium in S35 mode.
Cinematic Heritage
Cooke originally designed the Speed Panchros for the film industry in the 1920s to provide fast aperture lenses with smooth rendering and natural warmth. Used extensively through the 1960s, they helped define the look of classic Hollywood films. As digital sensors evolved, many filmmakers sought out rehoused vintage Panchros to mitigate sharpness. In response, Cooke released the Panchro/i Classics in the 2010s, bringing the vintage optical recipe into the modern era with new housings, consistency, and metadata support. Panchro/i Classic S35 lenses have appeared in a wide range of projects, including the Netflix period series The Crown.
