About the Cooke Varotal/i Zoom Cinema Lenses
Cooke Varotal/i Zoom lenses are modern full-frame cinema zooms designed to match the Cooke Look of the S7/i and S8/i primes. They deliver smooth contrast, natural color, and consistent sharpness across the zoom range, maintaining a balanced, organic rendering without the clinical edge of many contemporary zooms.
Available in 19-40mm, 30-95mm, and 85-215mm ranges, they provide full-frame coverage with uniform mechanics and a constant T2.9 aperture. Focus behavior is precise with minimal breathing, and Cooke /i Technology enables lens metadata integration for modern workflows. Built as a true companion to Cookeโs flagship primes, Varotal/i zooms offer flexibility without sacrificing consistency in look or performance.
Image Fidelity & Focus
Cooke Varotal/i Zoom lenses deliver smooth contrast, warm color rendition, and naturalistic skin tones, and provide consistent sharpness across the frame with a smooth, natural contrast that flatters skin tones and resists the overly clinical rendering of some modern optics. Focus falloff is gradual and organic, giving images depth and dimensionality. Breathing is minimal, ensuring clean focus pulls, and the zooms maintain consistent image fidelity throughout their range, preserving the warm color rendition and pleasing roll-off that define Cookeโs optical character.
Flare & Bokeh
Bokeh is creamy and distinctly cinematic, with rounded out-of-focus highlights and a gentle falloff that enhances depth without distraction. Flare response is classic Cooke: controlled yet expressive, with a gentle glow that enhances highlights without overwhelming the image. Flare control is well balanced and flexible, maintaining contrast in challenging lighting while allowing for pleasing veiling flares and halos with direct sources.
Handling & Adaptability
Focus mechanics are exceptionally refined, featuring long, consistent focus throws, minimal breathing, and accurate witness marks for reliable focus pulling, with the added benefit of Cookeโs /i Technology for lens metadata capture. With a uniform T2.9 aperture across most of the range, they balance speed with manageable size and weight.
Image Circle
Designed with a large image circle of 46.3 mm, the Varotal/i series fully covers full-frame and beyond, making them versatile across todayโs cinema cameras.
Cinematic Heritage
Historically, Cookeโs original Varotals were among the first cine zooms to earn a reputation for combining high performance with cinematic character. This connection between past and present allows the Varotal/i Zooms to serve productions that need both the efficiency of zooms and the aesthetic qualities of Cooke primes, cementing their place as a contemporary workhorse with deep historical roots.
