About the ARRI Master Macro 100mm Cinema Lens
The ARRI Master Macro 100mm T2.0 is a dedicated macro cinema lens designed to deliver true 1:1 reproduction while maintaining the optical precision and consistency of the ARRI/Zeiss Master Prime series. Built for Super 35 capture, it combines extreme close-focus capability with the sharpness, contrast, and reliability expected from high-end production lenses.
Unlike many macro lenses, the Master Macro remains flat-field and distortion-free at close distances, allowing fine textures and micro-detail to be rendered with exceptional clarity across the entire frame. It maintains high contrast and flare resistance even in challenging lighting conditions, while smooth, natural bokeh supports both technical close-ups and more expressive, cinematic imagery. With robust mechanics, long focus rotation, and seamless integration with Master Prime workflows, it functions equally well as a precision macro tool and a medium-telephoto lens for narrative and commercial production.
ย
Image Fidelity & Focus
The Master Macro inherits the high contrast and extreme sharpness of the Master Primes, but with refinements for close-focus work. Wide open at T2.0, it maintains exceptional resolution, allowing even the smallest details to be rendered crisply. Unlike many macro lenses that suffer softness or field curvature at close distances, the Master Macro remains flat-field and distortion-free, ensuring that product shots, textures, and extreme close-ups reproduce faithfully. Image fidelity is outstanding across the entire frame, even at 1:1 magnification. Falloff is minimal and controlled, helping subjects remain evenly sharp edge to edge. Chromatic aberration is nearly nonexistentโan impressive feat at macro distances where color fringing often plagues lesser optics.
Handling & Adaptability
Mechanically, the Master Macro mirrors the robust, production-ready design of the Master Primes. It features consistent focus and iris gear placement, a 114mm front diameter, and a 300ยฐ+ focus rotation for fine control. The lens is heavier than standard primes at about 3.3 kg (7.3 lbs), but this weight is expected for a macro design of such precision.
Flare & Bokeh
The lens resists veiling glare and flare thanks to advanced coatings, delivering high-contrast images even when pointed at strong sources. The bokeh is smooth and rounded thanks to a precision iris design, with out-of-focus areas appearing natural and free of harsh outlining. This makes the lens equally at home for beauty close-ups and emotional storytelling, not just technical product shots.
Image Circle
With a PL mount and full Super 35 coverage at 42mm, the lens integrates seamlessly into ARRI and other high-end camera systems. When paired with modern full-frame sensors, it covers the S35 portion natively, and some DPs pair it with expanders for larger formats.
Cinematic Heritage
Developed by Zeiss in partnership with ARRI, the Master Macro was introduced in the mid-2000s alongside the Master Primes, with the goal of allowing cinematographers to maintain visual consistency across an entire production, whether shooting extreme close-ups or standard coverage. Before its introduction, productions often relied on specialty macro lenses that lacked the contrast, flare control, and mechanical consistency of cine primes. The Master Macro thus became the first true high-end macro cinema lens designed as part of a flagship system.
