Zoom - Spherical - Full Frame

product details

The Laowa 24mm T14โ€“40 PeriProbe is a specialty probe lens designed for unique close-up and immersive shots, and one of the most unusual and innovative lenses in modern cinema. A long, slender barrel allows the camera to move into tight or unusual spaces, slide through confined settings or immerse viewers in miniature environments โ€“ capturing perspectives impossible with traditional optics. It is a favorite for commercials, macro nature work, and stylized inserts. Available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

Image Fidelity & Focus

Despite its slow speed, it delivers sharp, detailed images across its field. A variable aperture from T14 to T40 is an indication of its extreme optical design, in which a 24mm focal length provides a wide, immersive perspective. Depth of field is extremely deep, creating surreal images where both foreground and background remain in focus. Sharpness is high at the center, with edge softness that enhances depth. Contrast is natural, though flare sensitivity adds character. Aberrations are minimal, though slight edge softness is visible.

Flare & Bokeh

Flare is controlled but can create expressive veiling when provoked. Bokeh is limited due to deep depth of field, but close-focus ability allows for striking perspectives in which bokeh is subtle but smooth.

Handling & Adaptability

The PeriProbe is long and unusual in shape, designed for specialized rigs, dollies, and motion-control systems. Its 360-degree rotating barrel allows flexible camera angles. Lightweight compared to older probe systems, it adapts across EF, PL, and other mounts, and is popular for tabletop, food, and commercial cinematography.

Image Circle

The lens covers a Full Frame image circle up to 47mm, making it versatile for large-sensor digital cinema.

Cinematic Heritage

Introduced in the early 2020s, the PeriProbe built on Laowaโ€™s earlier 24mm Probe lens, adding periscope flexibility and improved mechanics. It quickly gained popularity in commercial filmmaking, where unique perspectives are often demanded.
