About the Laowa Pro2be Probe Cinema Lens
The Laowa Pro2be is a specialized 24mm probe lens system designed for extreme close-up cinematography where precision and flexibility are critical. With 2x magnification and a close working distance, it allows cinematographers to capture highly detailed textures while physically placing the lens in spaces conventional optics cannot reach.
Available in Direct, 35ยฐ, and Periscope configurations, the system is built for creative control in tabletop, product, and motion-control environments. Its long, narrow barrel and waterproof design enable shooting through liquids or confined environments, expanding visual possibilities beyond standard macro lenses. With a T8 aperture and full-frame coverage, it delivers controlled, high-resolution imagery tailored for technical and stylized work.

Image Fidelity & Focus
The Pro2be delivers significantly improved image quality, sharpness, and color accuracy over Venus Opticsโ original probe lens, thanks to a refined optical formula incorporating multiple high-refractive-index (HR) and extra-low dispersion (ED) elements (33 or 34 elements across 24-25 groups). Capable of 2:1 macro reproduction, with a working distance as tight as 4mm. Natural light falloff at the edges is to be expected when shooting extremely close.
Handling & Adaptability
The Direct and 35ยฐ versions of the Pro2be lens measure approximately 500mm (19.7 in) in length (the Periscope version measures slightly longer) and weigh between 1.04 and 1.06 kg (2.3-2.4 lbs). The barrel is exceptionally slender at about 30mm in diameter, with nearly 366mm of waterproofing for submerged or liquid-immersed shooting. In some versions, rotating mechanisms near the mount allow extreme flexibility for creative, awkward, or unreachable angles. These lenses are built with 0.8 MOD gearing on focus and iris rings, featuring a 150ยฐ focus throw and 50ยฐ iris throw, complete with hard stops and distance/magnification markings. Seven user-interchangeable mounts are compatible โ ARRI PL, Canon EF/RF, Nikon F/Z, Sony E, and L-Mount.
Flare & Bokeh
Advanced lens coatings and glass types minimize chromatic aberration and help control flare, maintaining clean and precise rendering, even at extreme close focus. With a maximum aperture of T8, depth of field is relatively deep for a macro lens, though the 10-blade iris should yield smoother, more rounded out-of-focus highlights than prior designs, which used only 7 blades.
Image Circle
Full-frame coverage with an image circle of approximately 43.2mm. The 85ยฐ diagonal field of view is ideal for both full frame and S35 formats.
Cinematic Heritage
Venus Optics originally launched a unique 24mm F14 macro probe in 2018, and revisited the design in 2023 with the Pro2be series, significantly improving optical performance, brightening the aperture to T8, adding weather resistance and enhancing ergonomics.
