product details

Leitz HUGO Primes fuse the rich visual legacy of Leica M photography optics with professional-grade cinematography design. Built upon the much-admired Leitz M 0.8 series, these lenses honor Leicaโ€™s storied optical heritage with warm, rich imagery in a compact, cine-ready form and a modern, durable cine housing. They are characterized by fast apertures, close focus, sharp centers, and a classic look reminiscent of 1970s and โ€˜80s Hollywood. Leitz HUGO Primes come in eleven full frame focal lengths from 18mm to 135mm, most with a fast T1.5 aperture. These are supplemented by a 50mm T1.0 Noctilux โ€œspecial edition.โ€ The 180mm Leica Cine T2 can also be provided in LPL mount to extend the set. Leitz HUGO Primes are available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

Leitz Hugo Lenses

Image Fidelity & Focus

Leitz HUGO Primes retain iconic optical traits like warm, natural color rendition and gently rounded image fields. They deliver sharp central detail without harshness, gentle contrast, and pleasing edge falloff, thanks to field curvature that subtly draws attention toward the subject and renders painterly separation. Slight distortion and aberrations are not overly corrected, yet not obvious.

Handling & Adaptability

Mechanically, the HUGO series is cinema-ready, with 270ยฐ focus throws, standardized gear placements, user-swappable mounts (LPL considered standard, with optional Leica M or L), and significantly improved close-focusing abilities for their class. They benefit from a compact, featherweight form, starting at just 0.81 kg and ranging from 2.7 to 4.4 inches in length.

Flare & Bokeh

Expressive, glimmering bokeh, classic flaring and painterly background separation reinforce the distinctive Leica character. Bokeh may contain rainbow colors. Lower contrast keeps images smooth and falloff feeling natural.

Image Circle

Each lens in the HUGO line has a consistent 95 mm front diameter and an image circle of about 43.3 mm, perfectly suited to large-format and full-frame sensors.

Cinematic Heritage

Leitz HUGO primes are named after Leica engineer Hugo Wehrenfennig, who is known for bringing Leica M photography optics into the world of cinematography.
