About the Leitz Elsie Cinema Lenses
The Leitz Elsie primes are a modern full-frame cinema lens set designed to deliver Leitz image quality in a compact, production-friendly format. Covering a wide focal range from 15mm to 150mm at T2.1, they provide consistent color, contrast, and rendering across the set, making them reliable for multi-camera and fast-paced productions.
They balance high resolution for modern digital sensors with gentle roll-off and natural tonal transitions, avoiding an overly clinical look. Built with LPL mounts and lightweight housings, they are well suited for handheld, gimbal, and location work where larger cinema lenses can be limiting. Positioned as an accessible entry into the Leitz ecosystem, they offer a practical combination of portability, consistency, and cinematic image quality.
ย
Image Fidelity & Focus
Color rendition is natural and consistent across the set, with faithful reproduction of skin tones. Elsie primes deliver crisp sharpness with smooth roll-off, maintaining a natural, filmic rendering rather than excessive clinical precision. Gradual but noticeable falloff in the corners creates a dimensional pop that draws the eye to the center of the frame. Contrast is balanced, producing solid blacks and gentle highlight roll-off. Chromatic aberrations are minimal, reflecting their high-end optical design.
Handling & Adaptability
The Elsies are compact and light, making them highly suitable for handheld, drone, and gimbal work. They feature consistent 95mm fronts from 21-100mm (114mm on wider and longer focal lengths), standardized gear placement, and metadata support. The shallower flange depth of the LPL standard increased design flexibility, resulting in higher performance without any sacrifice in mechanical or optical integrity. Their adaptability across full-frame cinema cameras positions them as versatile tools for modern productions.
Flare & Bokeh
Elsie primes have a new aperture design that creates a bokeh comparable to the M lenses โ soft, rounded and creamy, with neutral color rendition. Flare behavior is clean, minimal and controlled, but still produces attractive cinematic streaks.
Image Circle
Elsie primes cover Full Frame with a 46.5mm image circle.
Cinematic Heritage
With the introduction of the Elsie Primes in 2022, Leitz aimed to bring its legendary optical character to a wider audience of filmmakers, from high-end streaming projects to commercials. The name pays homage to the legacy of Ernst Leitz, founder of Leica.
