About the Zeiss CP.3 Cinema Lenses

The ZEISS Compact Prime CP.3 lenses are full-frame cinema primes designed to combine the clean, crisp ZEISS image with compact, standardized housings and practical mechanics for professional production. The 10-lens set spans 15mm through 135mm, offering a broad focal range for everything from expansive wide-angle work to tighter portrait and telephoto compositions.

The CP.3 lenses are known for high image quality, consistent color matching across the series, and a clean, controlled rendering suited to modern digital cinematography. Standardized focus-ring positioning, a consistent 95mm front diameter, 300-degree focus rotation, calibrated focus scales, and interchangeable lens mounts make the CP.3 series practical for fast-paced production environments and a wide range of camera systems.

Image Fidelity & Focus

The ZEISS CP.3 primes are designed for high image quality with consistent color characteristics across the series, allowing the full 15mm to 135mm set to intercut smoothly throughout a production. Their rendering is clean and controlled, with strong resolution and contrast suited to modern digital cinema. ZEISS specifies a 300° focus rotation and calibrated focus scales, giving assistants precise, repeatable manual focus control.

Handling & Adaptability

The CP.3 series uses compact, cine-style housings with consistent 95mm front diameters and standardized mechanics across the set. Interchangeable mounts allow the lenses to adapt to a broad range of cinema and mirrorless camera systems, while the compact size and consistent control layout make the set practical for handheld, gimbal, Steadicam, and conventional studio builds.

Flare & Bokeh

The CP.3 series uses a circular 14-blade aperture designed to produce natural-looking out-of-focus highlights and smooth bokeh. Modern ZEISS coatings help maintain contrast and image quality under challenging lighting conditions. ZEISS does not define a specific stylized flare color for the CP.3 line, so their flare behavior is best characterized as controlled rather than intentionally exaggerated.

Image Circle

The CP.3 series covers a 46.3mm image circle, providing full-frame 36 × 24mm coverage across the range, including the 15mm through 135mm focal lengths in this set. This allows the lenses to be used on Full Frame and many VistaVision-format digital cinema cameras while remaining fully compatible with Super 35 capture.

Cinematic Heritage

The Compact Prime CP.3 series continues ZEISS’s Compact Prime concept, combining established ZEISS cinema optics with a smaller, more accessible mechanical platform than the company’s flagship cinema lens families. Introduced as the successor to the CP.2 line, the CP.3 generation improved the mechanics, standardized the housings, retained full-frame coverage, and preserved interchangeable mounts for flexible use across professional camera systems.
