TLS Zeiss Super Speed

Prime - Spherical - Super 35

product details

Zeiss Super Speeds are iconic, fast primes designed to meet the demands of low-light cinematography. Industry-standard TLS rehousing has revitalized them for contemporary productions. Prized for their ability to combine fast aperture, expressive character, and cinematic heritage with modern usability, Super Speeds are defined by their wide-open character. At T1.3, they exhibit low contrast, gentle halation, and a dreamy softness around highlights, giving images an atmospheric quality. Stopping down improves sharpness dramatically, yielding crisp detail while maintaining Zeiss neutrality. The set includes focal lengths of 18mm, 25mm, 35mm, 50mm, 65mm and 85mm, all at a legendary T1.3. Available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

Image Fidelity & Focus

Celebrated for outstanding image quality, Super Speeds produce a sharp, high contrast, slightly cool-toned image with distinctly vintage cinematic character. They are characterized by graceful focus fall-off, expressive bokeh and beautiful flares. High transmission makes them invaluable for night shoots and natural-light filmmaking. Image fidelity leans toward natural rather than clinical, helping to preserve a filmic aesthetic. Chromatic aberrations and edge softness are visible wide open but contribute to the distinct look.

Handling & Adaptability

TLS rehoused Super Speeds benefit from standardized mechanicsโ€”geared focus and iris rings, consistent front diameters, and durable housings. The original designs were compact but mechanically inconsistent, and rehousing corrects these flaws, making them reliable for todayโ€™s workflows. Weight remains light, ideal for handheld, gimbal, or Steadicam use.

Flare & Bokeh

Bokeh is smooth and circular, with pleasing subject isolation. Flares are cinematic, with colorful streaks and veiling glare when pointed toward strong light sources.

Image Circle

They easily cover the Super 35 image circle (~31mm), aligning perfectly with the film and digital S35 era, though they vignette on larger formats.

Cinematic Heritage

Originally released in the late 1970s through the 1980s, Super Speeds played a huge role in the rise of 1980s and 90s cinema, enabling directors to shoot in practical locations with minimal lighting. They were used in countless films, from The Shining (directed by Stanley Kubrick and photographed by John Alcott, BSC) to independent features of the 1990s, where their speed and personality defined an era.
