Olympus OM Zero Optik
Image Fidelity & Focus
The original Olympus OM lenses emphasized compactness and optical precision, earning a reputation for delivering high contrast and excellent color transmission with a distinctly filmic quality. Re-engineered with robust cinema housings, they offer cinematographers a wide palette of looks depending on lighting. OM Primes are known for high resolving power and relatively low distortion, offering excellent resolution, with crisp central sharpness even wide open, and improved edge-to-edge performance when stopped down.
Handling & Adaptability
In their rehoused form, Zero Optik has refined the focus mechanics with expanded focus scales, smooth rotation, and proper gear placement, making them reliable for professional focus pulling. Thanks to Zero Optikโs compact design, the rehoused versions are only slightly heavier than the native OM lenses โ plus they gain durability, repeatable precision, and the robust mechanics required for professional sets.
Flare & Bokeh
Flare characteristics lean toward expressive and vintage, with noticeable veiling and colorful ghosting when pointed at strong light sources. The OM Primes produce smooth, natural bokeh with pleasing separation, particularly at wider apertures, while still retaining a touch of the vintage edge that adds character to highlights and transitions.
Image Circle
Their image circle comfortably covers full-frame sensors, allowing them to be used on both full-frame and Super 35 cinema cameras without vignetting.
Cinematic Heritage
Olympus designed the OM lenses as part of their OM system, to compete with Canon and Nikon during the film SLR boom. Decades later, the Zero Optik rehousing has revived these lenses for cinema use, preserving their vintage personality while giving filmmakers modern usability and consistency across sets.
