Leitz Thalia Lenses
Prime - Spherical - Medium Format
product details
The Leitz Thalia Prime lenses are high-end, full frame cinema lenses designed for ultra large format shooting. Rooted in legendary Leica medium format SL glass, and designed for todayโs cutting edge digital sensors, these lenses are perfectly suited for the Arri Alexa 65 and PL-mount 65mm film cameras such as the Arri 765 and the Fries 65mm. The look is not overly sharp, exhibiting a layered focus rolloff and a unique dimensional effect that seems to pull subjects out of the background. The lineup of ten lenses ranges from 24mm to 180mm, and includes three macro models: 24mm, 55mm, and 120mm. These are further augmented by the 90mm Thalia-T lens, which reincarnates the 1935 Leica Thambar optical design that renders the dreamlike, romantic look of Golden Age Hollywood, without a filter. Available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

Leitz Thalia Lenses
Image Fidelity & Focus
Thalia primes deliver a unique blend of high resolution and vintage-inspired character. They have lower contrast than Summilux or Summicron lenses, producing a gentler, more painterly rendering that is gentle, with soft edges and smooth cinematic fall-off that evokes vintage lenses, but with modern reliability. Skin tones appear natural and flattering. They produce natural colors and subtle highlight bloom. Sharpness is present but not clinical, favoring atmosphere over perfection.
Handling & Adaptability
Compared to other large format lenses, the Thalias are composed of a lightweight and compact design, in spite of their large image circle. They feature 95mm fronts, consistent mechanics, and robust housings. Available with both PL or LPL mounts, they adapt well to large-format cameras like the ARRI Alexa 65, LF, and RED Monstro.
Flare & Bokeh
An always-round 15-blade iris maintains a perfectly circular shape at every stop and creates smooth, utterly distinct bokeh, with round, textured highlights that maintain their shape across the frame. Flares are organic and expressive, with soft veiling glow. Aberrations are present but subtle, enhancing character.
Image Circle
Leitz Thalia primes were created for large-format cinematography, covering Full Frame, Alexa 65, and VistaVision sensors with a 60mm image circle.
Cinematic Heritage
The Leitz Thalia primes were introduced in 2017 and designed specifically to cover sensors as large as ARRI Alexa 65, while maintaining a distinct look that emphasizes character and artistry. Since then, Thalias have been used on high-profile films and commercials shot on large-format cameras, often in period pieces, dream sequences, or other projects where expressive softness and scale help elevate storytelling with a timeless visual identity. Notable credits: The Little Mermaid, shot by Dion Beebe, ASC, ACS; and Guillermo del Toroโs Frankenstein, shot by Dan Laustsen, ASC, DFF and coming in 2025.
