About the Leitz Summilux-C Cinema Lenses
Leitz Summilux-C primes are high-speed cinema lenses built for demanding productions that require both precision and expressive image quality. With a consistent T1.4 aperture across the set, they deliver exceptional sharpness and contrast while maintaining a natural, filmic rendering that avoids a harsh or overly clinical look. Skin tones are a defining strength, with a smooth, dimensional quality often described as โcreamy sharpness.โ
Color consistency, minimal aberration, and reliable performance across all focal lengths make them a standard on high-end narrative, commercial, and streaming productions. Despite their speed, they remain relatively compact and well-balanced, allowing for flexible use across handheld, studio, and stabilized setups, while pairing seamlessly with the Leica 180mm T2 for extended reachโavailable exclusively at Cine Visuals.
Image Fidelity & Focus
Summilux-Cs combine Leicaโs renowned sharpness and micro-contrast with cinematic smoothness. They feature a multi-aspherical design and minimal breathing, with exceptionally low distortion and virtually no chromatic aberration. They are sharp, even wide open at T1.4, with shallow depth of field and creamy, rounded bokeh. Focus falloff is graceful, producing striking subject separation. Color reproduction is rich, natural, accurate, with smooth skin-tone rendering.
Flare & Bokeh
Bokeh is creamy and consistent, while flares are subtle, elegant and controlled. Chromatic aberrations are negligible, even under challenging lighting.
Handling & Adaptability
Summilux-Cs are relatively compact for T1.4 lenses, with consistent 95mm fronts (except the 135mm, which is 144) and matched focus and iris gears. Their lighter weight compared to competitors makes them adaptable for handheld and Steadicam work. They feature titanium PL mounts and metadata support.
Image Circle
An approximately 33mm image circle covers Super 35 sensors.
Cinematic Heritage
The Summilux-Cs marked Leicaโs entry into dedicated cinema optics, developed in collaboration with CW Sonderoptic when digital cinematography demanded improved resolution and low-light performance. Notable credits: The Revenant (2015), The Hunger Games series, Westworld, 1883, and Succession.
