product details
Canon FD lenses have found new life in modern cinema through rehousing. These vintage still photo lenses, adapted for professional filmmaking, retain their classic optical character while gaining modern cine mechanics such as unified gear placement, expanded focus throw, and durable housings. The GL Optics rehousing process transforms the original FD optics into fully functional cinema lenses, with improved focus precision and robustness suitable for high-end production. Rehoused Canon FD lenses are available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

GL Optics Canon FD
Image Fidelity & Focus
Optically, Canon FD lenses are known for their warm color rendering, subtle low-contrast look, and distinctive vintage flare. Not clinically sharp by todayโs standards, FD lenses offer a pleasing, gentle roll-off from in-focus to out-of-focus areas โ a natural, slightly imperfect falloff that enhances their nostalgic character and makes them ideal for narrative and period-style cinematography. Skin tones rendered in a flattering, slightly golden hue.
Handling & Adaptability
Thanks to GL Optics rehousing, Canon FD lenses feature PL mounts, consistent front diameters, and geared focus/aperture rings. This makes them fully compatible with professional rigs while retaining their vintage optics. Compared to modern cine primes, they remain compact and relatively lightweight, ideal for handheld, gimbal, and Steadicam shooting. Rehoused Canon FDs are highly usable cine primes that retain their vintage character while gaining the consistency and precision cinematographers need.
Flare & Bokeh
Flares are colorful and expressive, often producing rainbow arcs or veiling glow. The coatings on these lenses are less aggressive than modern optics, resulting in more pronounced and expressive flares โ especially in backlit scenarios โ adding organic texture to the image. Chromatic aberrations are more apparent than in modern glass, but they contribute to the lensesโ nostalgic charm. Bokeh is creamy and rounded, reinforcing the painterly quality of the lenses.
Image Circle
Rehoused Canon FD lenses cover full-frame sensors with ease.
Cinematic Heritage
Canon FD lenses were originally produced between the 1970s and 1980s for Canonโs manual focus SLR cameras. They earned a reputation for sharpness and color fidelity. With the advent of digital cinema cameras, this vintage glass gained a second life, prized for their unique balance of sharpness and softness, smooth falloff and gentle flares.
