Gecko-Cam Genesis G35 Vintage ’66

Prime - Spherical - Full Frame

product details

The Genesis G35 Vintage ’66 primes are a variation of the G35 line, modified to evoke the aesthetic of 1960s optics. They share the same focal lengths—from 14.5mm to 135mm—but employ custom coatings and glass treatments to alter their rendering. Focal lengths mirror the base set. Available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

Image Fidelity & Focus

Vintage ’66 lenses are designed to produce lower contrast and softer edge sharpness compared to the standard G35s. Their rendering leans toward nostalgic warmth, with slightly desaturated colors and glowing highlights. Chromatic aberrations are more visible, adding to the analog feel. Focus falloff is smoother, creating painterly transitions. In addition to the base focal lengths, a 100 mm Vintage ’66 Macro delivers 1:1 magnification with internal focus and refined contrast for tight portraiture.

Handling & Adaptability

Mechanically, the Vintage ’66 primes are identical to the G35s. Their ergonomics make them as adaptable as the originals, but their visual personality allows cinematographers to treat them as a complementary “character set.” Primarily offered in PL mount, the G35s can be adapted to LPL (especially for Venice), alongside support for electronic data connections. Mechanically sophisticated yet compact, for full-frame cine lenses, the G35s are lighter than many competitors. The G35 primes feature a 114mm front diameter (consistent across the set); lightweight bodies, (typically 1.1–1.2kg or 2.4–2.6lbs. per lens); uniform form factors and gear placements optimized for gimbals and camera control systems; and round iris and lubricant‑free iris assembly for reliability. The 270° focus throw enables precision focus pulls even at wide apertures. These specs make them well‑suited to modern handheld, gimbal, or aerial workflows without sacrificing cine-level ergonomics.

Flare & Bokeh

Nostalgic glaze is brought out by stripping front coatings for expressive flare and halation, and internal single-layer coatings allow responsive, rainbow‑tinged or halation flares that evoke analog character without devolving into uncontrolled veiling. The Vintage ‘66 iris uses 14 rounded blades and yields soft, textured bokeh that’s dreamy without becoming mushy, often with a swirled quality that enhances vintage character.

Image Circle

With a 46.3 mm image circle, the G35 Vintage ‘66 Primes fully cover full‑frame and VistaVision formats. They also work comfortably on Super 35 sensors with minimal edge loss, making them flexible tools across platforms.

Cinematic Heritage

Gecko-Cam, based in Munich, built its reputation on rehousing vintage optics before developing its own in-house designs. The Genesis G35s were born from Gecko‑Cam’s expertise in vintage lens restoration and their understanding of cinematographers’ hunger for character-driven glass that works in the digital age. Unveiled in 2022, their growing reputation is based on their ability to provide precision without sterility, and an alternative to cleaner lenses such as Zeiss Supremes or Cooke S7s.
