Image Fidelity & Focus

Premiers offer outstanding sharpness and contrast, holding detail from center to corner even at wide open apertures. Contrast is strong, with high micro-contrast. Sharpness is extremely high edge to edge. Designed for 4K and higher capture, they offer resolution on par with top-tier primes. Image fidelity is exceptionally high, with consistent color reproduction and no noticeable breathing when pulling focus. Falloff is gentle and natural, creating smooth transitions at the edges of the frame. Chromatic aberration is extremely well managed—both lateral and longitudinal fringing are virtually absent, even in high-contrast conditions. The T2.0 aperture in the wide and standard zooms allows for shallower depth of field than most cinema zooms, contributing to their prime-like feel.

Handling & Adaptability

Despite their optical power, the Premiers are large and heavy, designed primarily for demanding studio and high-end production environments. The 14.5–45mm and 18–85mm weigh around 11–14 lbs (5–6.5 kg), while the 24–180mm and 75–400mm can reach 20–24 lbs (9–11 kg). Front diameters range between 136–150mm. Each lens features precise, long-focus rotation (up to 280°) with large, readable markings, making them AC-friendly. They are PL mount lenses, optimized for Super 35 coverage (~28mm image circle), though they remain adaptable to digital systems via mount adapters or cropped large-format shooting.

Flare & Bokeh

Bokeh is clean but not clinical, and smooth and round, particularly in the longer zooms, with pleasing subject separation that enhances cinematic depth. Flares are very well suppressed, thanks to advanced coatings that minimize veiling glare while still allowing controlled flares when desired.

Image Circle

Super 35 – approximately 31mm.

Cinematic Heritage

Fujinon launched the Premier series at a time when digital cinematography was rapidly gaining ground, and productions needed zooms that could deliver prime-like optical quality without compromise. Premiers have been used extensively on big-budget films, prestige television, and commercials – examples include Iron Man 2, Skyfall, Top Gun: Maverick, and The Dark Knight Rises.
