Fujinon Cabrio Zooms

Zoom - Spherical - Super 35

product details

Fujinon’s Cabrio zooms were created to bridge the gap between cinema-grade PL glass with true cine ergonomics and ENG-style, servo-driven practicality. The 19–90mm T2.9 debuted at NAB 2012, and soon after came the 85–300mm T2.9–4.0, the 14–35mm T2.9, the long-range 25–300mm T3.5–3.85, and the more affordable XK6x20 20–120mm T3.5. Together, they gave Super 35 productions a cohesive, lightweight zoom set that behaved like variable primes while allowing run-and-gun operation. Available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

Image Fidelity & Focus

Contrast is classically neutral with 4K resolving power across the frame, delivering a modern, crisp image with high fidelity. Sharpness is excellent across the frame. There’s no obvious color bias, ideal for crafting a look with lighting and filtration rather than baked-in glass personality. Focus breathing is well-controlled for narrative reframes. T-stops are constant on 14–35 and 19–90 (T2.9) and across most of 25–300 (T3.5 to ~273 mm), with a gentle ramp to T3.85 at 300 mm.

Handling & Adaptability

The hallmark of the Cabrio Zooms is the detachable drive unit with rocker, start/stop and auto-iris, plus LDS/i metadata through the PL contacts—so they live happily on cinema builds and ENG-style rigs alike. Weights are roughly 2.85–2.9 kg (6.1–6.4 lb) for the 14–35mm and 19–90mm with servos, and about 2.9 kg for the XK 20–120mm.

Flare & Bokeh

Illumination roll-off is gentle with well-managed vignetting on S35. Bokeh is neutral, smooth but not strong, and stays pleasingly round thanks to the nine-blade iris. Flares are tightly controlled and minimal. Modern multi-coatings keep veiling glare tame while still allowing controllable, cine-friendly flare when nudged by hard sources.

Image Circle

All Cabrio Zooms share Super 35 coverage with an approximately 31.5 mm image circle.

Cinematic Heritage

By bringing a broadcast-style servo to a compact PL zoom with prime-like performance, the original 19–90mm fulfilled a long-standing wish list for documentary, commercial and episodic crews who needed speed without sacrificing cinema mechanics. The lineup expanded quickly in 2012–2014 to cover wide, standard, tele and a 12X long zoom, cementing Cabrios as the go-to handheld S35 zooms of the 2010s.
