product details
Zeiss Super Speeds are iconic, high performance, compact spherical primes, famous for their T1.3 aperture and prized for their speed, personality and wide-open character. Developed in Germany in the late 1970s and early 1980s, they became a staple of film and early digital cinema. Today, they are valued by cinematographers who want classic Zeiss precision mixed with expressive imperfections โ their classic optical qualities and subtle vintage characteristics make them a great match for todayโs sensors. Available in focal lengths of 18mm, 25mm, 35mm, 50mm, 65mm and 85mm. Super Speeds can be rented or sub-rented from Cine Visuals in full sets, partial sets, or as single lenses.

Zeiss Super Speed Lenses
Image Fidelity & Focus
Super Speeds are widely considered some of the most capable and beautiful vintage lenses available. Rendering is cinematic, with high contrast and minimal focus breathing. Wide open, they deliver shallow depth of field, lower contrast, softer edges and gentle glow around highlights, giving a romantic, atmospheric look. Stopped down, they become sharp and crisp, behaving closer to Standard Speeds.
Handling & Adaptability
Compact and lightweight, Super Speeds were designed for handheld and Steadicam work, and are often used in television and documentary filmmaking. Their mechanics are robust, and they feature a T1.3 aperture, 80mm front diameters, and PL mounts.
Flare & Bokeh
These lenses are known for beautiful blue and magenta lens flares, which are expressive but not overwhelming. Bokeh is smooth but swirly toward the edges. Chromatic aberrations are present wide open but diminish when stopped down.
Image Circle
Zeiss Super Speeds cover Super 35 sensors, making them adaptable across decades of cameras.
Cinematic Heritage
These lenses were first manufactured in West Germany and became popular in the 1970s and 80s, especially with filmmakers shooting in available or low light โ their T1.3 speed was revolutionary. They remain a favorite lens for many filmmakers, and have been used in a wide range of productions โ The Shining and Straight Outta Compton are two disparate examples.
