Zeiss Standard Speed
Prime - Spherical - Super 35
product details
Zeiss Standard Speeds are classic spherical cine primes with clean, neutral rendering โ and one of the most iconic cine prime sets in history. More than half a century after their wide introduction around 1970, they remain workhorses due to their reliability, consistency, neutral optics and understated beauty. They produce a smooth, pleasing image with medium contrast and are flattering for portraiture. Older optical designs with vintage glass and coatings help take some of the edge off of digital sensors. The set includes 14 focal lengths from 10mm to 180mm, with maximum apertures of T2.1. Available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

Zeiss Standard Speed
Image Fidelity & Focus
Zeiss Standard Speeds provide moderate contrast, good sharpness, and natural color, with a slightly softer look than modern Zeiss glass. Falloff is smooth and gentle, with natural dimensionality. They are known for their balanced rendering: sharp but not clinical, with pleasing skin tones. Chromatic aberrations are minimal, and distortion is low. These are versatile lenses that produce a timeless, filmic look.
Handling & Adaptability
With most weighing around one pound, Standard Speeds are among the smallest and lightest cine lenses available, making them well suited to handheld and Steadicam work. Their mechanics are robust, with consistent gearing and smooth focus throws. Front diameter is 80mm, with two exceptions โ the 10mm (156mm) and the 12mm (114mm).
Flare & Bokeh
Flares are well controlled but offer subtle, beautiful character. Bokeh is smooth and circular, producing pleasing separation, and gaining texture when stopped down.
Image Circle
Covering Super 35 sensors, Standard Speeds are adaptable across decades of cinema cameras.
Cinematic Heritage
Introduced by Zeiss in collaboration with ARRI starting in 1964, the Standard Speeds are one of the most important and enduring cine lens lines ever produced. In response to the growing need for fast, reliable cine primes in the 1970s, they became dominant lenses of the era, used on countless productions worldwide โ Star Wars, Fargo and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, to name a few.
