product details

TRIBE7 Blackwing7 lenses feature modern engineering with a variably vintage aesthetic, built on the concept of โ€œtunable expression.โ€ Cinematographers can choose from among three factory-set tuning options: S (Straight), T (Transitional), and X (Expressive). Each offers a slightly different balance of contrast, sharpness, flare, and falloff. A full set includes ten focal lengths: 17mm, 20mm, 23.7mm, 27mm, 37mm, 47mm, 57mm, 77mm, 107mm, and 137mm. Available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

Image Fidelity & Focus

Blackwing7 lenses are not clinically sharp in the way that modern optics are, instead striking a balance between resolution and organic rendering. At wider apertures, contrast softens slightly, while edge-to-edge sharpness falls off in a gentle, cinematic manner. This creates a subtle vintage character without overt distortion or muddiness. Image fidelity is maintained along with a distinctive filmic quality. Graceful focus falloff draws the eye toward the subject while retaining depth in the image, particularly at the edges of the frame. Highlights are handled with painterly softness.

Handling & Adaptability

Despite their large format coverage, Blackwing7s are relatively compact. Weights vary from 1.6kg to 2.3kg depending on the focal length, with consistent 110mm front diameters across the set. This uniformity makes them highly practical for use on gimbals, drones, and steadicams. Long focus throws and well-damped rings make them precise for focus pullers, even at wider apertures. PL mount is standard, but the lenses can be adapted to other mounts.

Flare & Bokeh

Flare response is tunable by design โ€“ cinematographers can select a version with bold, colorful streaks (X tuning), one with more a restrained response (S tuning), or an option in between the two with a pleasing amount of character (T tuning). Chromatic aberration is present but controlled, adding character without distraction. Bokeh is a major hallmark of the Blackwing series โ€“ out-of-focus areas bloom into creamy, organic shapes, with a subtle swirl at certain focal lengths. Specular highlights carry a gentle halo, reinforcing the unique personality of the lenses.

Image Circle

Each lens is designed with a very large image circle, fully compatible with large-format digital cinema cameras such as the ARRI ALEXA LF, Sony VENICE and RED Monstro. Many focal lengths even have enough image circle to cover medium format sized sensors such as the ALEXA 65 and FUJI ETERNA.

Cinematic Heritage

TRIBE7 was co-founded by Bradford Young, ASC, the Academy Awardโ€“nominated cinematographer of Arrival and Solo: A Star Wars Story. Blackwing7s, introduced in 2019, were conceived as an antidote to overly sterile optics, giving cinematographers the ability to tailor lens behavior depending on the needs of a given project. Blackwing7s have been used on numerous high-profile productions including David Fincherโ€™s Mank, shot in black-and-white by Erik Messerschmidt, ASC on the RED Ranger Monstro, echoing the look of 1930s-40s Hollywood cinema.
