Image Fidelity & Focus
Optically, the S35 Nanomorph lenses deliver an image that balances modern clarity with the expressive qualities cinematographers expect from anamorphic glass. Center sharpness remains strong and dependable, while edges soften gradually to create dimensional separation between subject and environment. Contrast sits at a moderate level, allowing highlights to bloom gently rather than appearing harsh or clinical. Colors are rendered with neutral warmth, making the lenses flexible for both naturalistic imagery and stylized grading. Characteristic of anamorphic optics, the focus plane carries a subtle horizontal oval falloff as the image drifts into defocus. This natural focus rolloff produces a sense of depth that draws attention toward the subject while maintaining cohesion across the frame.
Handling & Adaptability
The physical design of the Nanomorphs reflects a clear awareness of practical filmmaking needs. Each focal length remains remarkably compact and lightweight for an anamorphic optic, typically weighing well under a pound. This allows operators to work comfortably on handheld rigs, gimbals, or drones without the front heavy strain associated with traditional anamorphic lenses. A generous focus rotation of 270ยบ provides focus pullers with precise control during focus pulls, making subtle transitions easier to execute. Consistent gear placement and similar housing dimensions across the set streamline lens swaps and minimize adjustments during fast paced production days. The lenses also support interchangeable PL and EF mounts, giving cinematographers flexibility when pairing them with a wide range of cinema and mirrorless camera systems.
Flare & Bokeh
One of the most recognizable pleasures of anamorphic cinematography lies in its flares and bokeh, and the Nanomorph lenses embrace both qualities with a controlled elegance. Horizontal flare streaks appear when strong light sources enter the frame, stretching gently across the image with a distinctly cinematic signature. Laowa offers these lenses in three flare coatings including blue, amber, and silver, allowing cinematographers to select a personality that suits the visual tone of the project. Cine Visuals currently offers the 27mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 80mm in with silver coatings and the 65mm in blue coatings with more to come. Bokeh transform into elongated vertical ovals due to the 1.5x squeeze ratio which adds softness and texture to backgrounds while preserving subject separation.
Image Circle
All five S35 Nanomorph lenses share the same carefully engineered image coverage designed for modern S35 digital cinema sensors. Each focal length projects an image circle of 30mm, ensuring reliable coverage across the set without any heavy vignetting. By maintaining a uniform image circle across every lens, Laowa allows cinematographers to move seamlessly between focal lengths without worrying about sensor coverage inconsistencies. This consistency ensures compatibility with cameras such as the ARRI Alexa Mini, Sony FX6 in S35 mode, mirrorless cameras, and many other widely used digital cinema systems.
Cinematic Heritage
Over the past decade Venus Optics - the company behind Laowa lenses - has built a reputation for inventive lenses that challenge expectations of what affordable glass can achieve. The Laowa Nanomorph 1.5x S35 series emerged from that same philosophy. Anamorphic lenses have long carried prestige but were historically large, expensive, and impractical for smaller productions. Laowa set out to close that gap. By developing an extremely compact 1.5x anamorphic design, the Nanomorph lenses brought the cinematic language of anamorphic photography into a lightweight and attainable package for independent filmmakers and modern digital productions.
