product details
Hawk V-Plus 2x anamorphic zooms deliver classic widescreen imagery with strong oval bokeh, horizontal flares, and gentle falloff. Designed to complement Hawkโs anamorphic prime sets, they are moderately sharp in the center with softer edges, lending a romantic, cinematic feel. Contrast is balanced, never harsh, with natural color reproduction. Cinematographers choose them for expressive storytelling, organic aberrations, and consistent character across the zoom range, making them popular where flexibility and anamorphic personality are both required. Focal lengths are 45-90mm and 80-180mm, both T2.8. Available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

Hawk V-Plus
Image Fidelity & Focus
The V-Plus zooms maintain Hawkโs signature anamorphic traits: strong horizontal flares, oval bokeh, and a sense of dimensionality from the 2x squeeze. Unlike most existing anamorphic zooms, the Hawk front anamorphic zoom lenses place the anamorphic element in front of the spherical elements. The resulting image displays all the anamorphic blur, shallow depth of field, elliptical highlights, streaks and flares, geometric curvature and barrel distortion, and distinct planes of focus cinematographers expect from anamorphic primes. They are sharper and higher contrast than earlier Hawk C- and V-Series primes, but still retain a touch of softness that cuts digital harshness. Focus fall-off is smooth, and breathing is controlled for anamorphic designs of their era. Aberrations are modest, though wide-open shooting reveals some edge softness.
Handling & Adaptability
These zooms are large and heavy, requiring studio support, but they are built with high-precision mechanics for repeatable focus and zoom moves. Like most Hawk lenses, they offer excellent close-focus capability. Their design integrates seamlessly with Hawkโs anamorphic primes, ensuring a consistent look across a production. While not suited for handheld work, they excel in studio, dolly, and crane setups.
Flare & Bokeh
Flares can be bold and dramatic, producing the classic blue streaks anamorphic cinematography is known for. Bokeh is classically oval.
Image Circle
Their 2x squeeze produces the traditional anamorphic look on Super 35 sensors, filling the format with dramatic scope.
Cinematic Heritage
By the early 2000s, the resurgence of anamorphic cinematography demanded new zooms with flexibility and character. Vantage Film in Germany responded with the Hawk V-Plus 2x anamorphic zooms, combining Hawkโs unique rendering with modern coatings and mechanics. The V-Plus anamorphic zooms have been used in European art cinema and Hollywood features alike, particularly in productions that require both widescreen spectacle and the efficiency of zoom shooting. They are known for bringing anamorphic flexibility into the modern era.
