Cooke S4/i
Image Fidelity & Focus
The Cooke S4/i Primes exemplify the โCooke Lookโ: warm contrast, smooth skin tones, and a gentle roll-off that avoids harshness. They balance sharpness with a subtle softness that flatters faces. Focus falloff is creamy, guiding the viewer naturally to the subject. They are characterized by excellent control of flare, distortion, veiling glare, and spherical aberrations.
Handling & Adaptability
The Cooke S4/i S35 Prime Lenses have a T2 aperture and are equipped with /i Electronics which provides vital metadata for consistency and reproducibility. The famous Cam-driven focus system is robust and reliable, providing smooth focus no matter the conditions. S4/i Primes are robustly built, with consistent 110mm fronts, uniform gear positions. They are moderately heavy, typically 3โ5 pounds per lens, but balanced for cinema rigs.
Flare & Bokeh
Flare control is excellent, with coatings designed to minimize veiling glare while still producing elegant, cinematic blooms. Chromatic aberrations are nearly absent, reflecting their high-end engineering. Bokeh is soft and circular, maintaining an organic quality across the set, in part thanks to an 8-leaf Linear Module Iris.
Image Circle
Super 35 format coverage.
Cinematic Heritage
Introduced in 1998, they have become a cornerstone of modern cinema opticโadaptable and consistent. Cooke designed the S4s as the companyโs modern flagship, addressing the demand for optics that could resolve finer detail for improved film stocks and digital cinema. Their /i metadata system was groundbreaking, anticipating the VFX-heavy workflows that would come to dominate the industry. S4/i lenses have been used on some of the most acclaimed films and television series of recent years, including Slumdog Millionaire (2008), Breaking Bad (2008-2013), and the Harry Potter films, to name a few.
