product details
Cooke Panchro/i Classic FF lenses are a modern reimagining of beloved vintage optics โ the legendary Speed Panchros from the 1920s-1960s, glass that helped define the look of Hollywoodโs Golden Age. Cooke engineered the Panchro/i Classic series to bring the vintage Cooke aesthetic into a reliable, full-frame digital workflow. The result combines the emotional resonance of vintage Speed Panchros with the reliability and adaptability required by contemporary productions. The Cooke Panchro/i Classic FF set includes 13 focal lengths: 18mm, 21mm, 25mm, 27mm, 32mm, 40mm, 50mm, 65mm (Macro), 75mm, 100mm, 135mm, and 152mm. Available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

Cooke Panchro/i Classic FF
Image Fidelity & Focus
Panchro/i Classic FF lenses offer a gentler contrast curve and slightly lower sharpness, echoing the vintage Speed Panchros, with consistency across the set. They resolve enough detail for 6K and 8K sensors, but with a smoother, more forgiving rendering that flatters skin tones. Colors are warm and natural, with the classic Cooke Look โ smooth gradation, pleasing saturation, and organic highlight roll-off. These lenses are prized for their beautiful depth transition, with a gradual, painterly falloff that gives images a three-dimensional quality. Focus breathing is controlled, though more noticeable than in Cookeโs higher-end S4 or S7 glass, adding to their character.
Handling & Adaptability
The Panchro/i Classic FF lenses maintain practical ergonomics for professional cinema. Most share a 110mm front diameter and a long 270ยฐ focus rotation. Their weight varies between 1.8 and 3.4 kg (4-7.5 lbs), making them lighter than many large-format cinema primes, which facilitates their use with Steadicam, handheld, or drone rigs. Mechanical build quality is robust, ensuring reliability in demanding production environments. Available in PL mount (with optional interchangeable mounts) and featuring Cooke /i Technology, for metadata transmission.
Flare & Bokeh
Coatings allow controlled but noticeable flaring, with warmer veiling flares and occasional rainbow effects when provoked. Chromatic aberration is minimal but present in backlit or high-contrast edges, adding subtle vintage texture. Out-of-focus areas are smooth and creamy, with a natural roundness that avoids the harsh or โnervousโ bokeh of some modern lenses. The oval shape and gentle edge definition enhance subject isolation.
Image Circle
The Cooke Panchro/i Classic FF series covers full-frame sensors (46.3mm image circle), making them suitable for modern large-format cameras like the ARRI Alexa LF, Sony Venice, and RED Monstro.
Cinematic Heritage
The original Cooke Speed Panchros were introduced in the 1920s and became iconic for their luminous rendering, flattering skin tones, and painterly falloff. They were used extensively in Hollywood and European cinema throughout the mid-20th century. In the digital age, cinematographers rediscovered their beauty but often struggled with rehoused vintage glass. Cooke responded by creating the Panchro/i Classic line in 2010. Among many memorable films shot with these lenses is The Favourite (2018, Robbie Ryan, BSC), where a vintage-inspired look matched the period dramaโs painterly aesthetic.
