Atlas Orion Silver Edition
Prime - 2x Anamorphic - Super 35
product details
Atlas Orion Silver Edition lenses are one of the first โboutiqueโ anamorphic setsโa limited-release reimagining of Atlas Lens Co.โs popular Orion anamorphic series, created in response to cinematographers who loved the mechanical reliability and affordability of the Orion series but wanted more expressive optical character and flexible flare behavior. Mechanically precise, production-friendly, yet optically adventurous, they bridge modern precision and vintage personality. Sets mirror the original Orion series, comprising 32mm T2, 40mm T2, 50mm T2, 65mm T2, 80mm T2, 100mm T2, 135mm T2.2, and 200mm T3.2. All feature a 2x anamorphic squeeze. Available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

Atlas Orion Silver Edition
Image Fidelity & Focus
Contrast is moderate, designed to balance cinematic softness with sufficient clarity for digital sensors. Wide open at T2, the lenses deliver a gentle falloff and painterly highlight roll-off; stopped down, they sharpen considerably while retaining organic rendering. Sharpness is improved over many vintage anamorphics but avoids being overly clinical. Image fidelity is strong in the center, with the traditional anamorphic softness and distortion at the edges that many DPs prize for character. Focus behavior is consistent across the set, with generous 270ยฐ+ focus rotation for precise pulls. Falloff is smooth, with subject isolation enhanced by the oval bokeh that anamorphic shooters love. Chromatic aberration is controlled but visible in high-contrast scenes, contributing to a more expressive look rather than technical distraction.
Handling & Adaptability
Mechanically, the Silver Editions share the Orion DNA: unified 114mm front diameters, geared focus and iris rings, and robust housings weighing between 2.2โ3.2 kg depending on focal length. Their size is manageable for studio and handheld rigs, though heavier than spherical primes. Adaptability is a major strength: PL mount standard, with optional EF, E, or RF conversions, making them usable on ARRI, RED, Sony, and Canon systems.
Flare & Bokeh
The hallmark of the Silver Editions is their flare versatility. Whereas the standard Orions produce the classic blue horizontal streak, the Silver Editions employ a neutral flare element that allows light sources to bloom in varied huesโblue, amber, white, purple, or even multicolorโdepending on the source. This gives cinematographers a wider creative palette without resorting to filters. Bokeh takes on the signature oval shape with subtle swirling at wider focal lengths, lending images a sense of movement and depth. Out-of-focus highlights bloom beautifully, while the flare elements give them a distinctive glow.
Image Circle
Silver Editions cover up to a 31mm image circle (Super 35), with Atlasโs optional 1.4x and 1.6x LF Extenders enabling coverage for larger sensors like ARRI LF or Sony Venice.
Cinematic Heritage
Atlas launched the Orion series in 2017 to democratize anamorphic filmmakingโoffering a full set of modern, reliable 2x anamorphics at a fraction of the cost of vintage lenses. The Silver Edition, unveiled in 2021, was a response to the demand for greater artistic flexibility, making them one of the first purpose-built โcharacter variantsโ of a modern anamorphic set. In cinema history, they represent the continued trend of independent optical houses challenging the dominance of legacy manufacturers by creating tools tailored to the aesthetics of digital filmmaking.
