Atlas Orion Anamorphics

Prime - 2x Anamorphic - Super 35

product details

Atlas Orion 2x Anamorphic lenses are modern cinema primes designed to bring the classic anamorphic lookโ€”oval bokeh, horizontal flares, and wide field of viewโ€”to contemporary filmmakers at an accessible price point. Orions are a full-featured set with reliable mechanics, expressive optics, and flexible adaptability. Color aberration is limited, though some purple and green fringing can appear at high-contrast edges wide open, adding character without overwhelming. The Atlas Orion core set includes 32mm T2, 40mm T2, 50mm T2, 65mm T2, 80mm T2, 100mm T2, 135mm T2.2, and 200mm T3.2. Each provides a consistent 2x anamorphic squeeze. Available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

Atlas Orion Anamorphics

Image Fidelity & Focus

Orions balance vintage character with modern sharpness. Wide open at T2, contrast is gentle, with a smooth highlight roll-off and mild softness that flatters skin tones. Stopped down, sharpness increases significantly, producing crisp and clean images suitable for high-resolution digital cinema. Image fidelity is high in the center, with natural falloff toward the edgesโ€”an intentional design choice to preserve the organic anamorphic feel. Focus breathing is minimal, supporting consistent storytelling through pulls.

Handling & Adaptability

Orions are robust and production-friendly. Each lens has a standardized 114mm front diameter, geared focus and iris rings, and a 270ยฐ+ focus rotation, making them compatible with professional follow-focus systems. Weight ranges between 2.2โ€“3.2 kg, heavier than spherical primes but consistent with professional anamorphic builds. Their size is well balanced for studio and handheld use, as well as steadicam or drone rigs with sufficient payload capacity. Mount options include PL standard, with interchangeable EF, E, or RF mounts available, ensuring adaptability across ARRI, RED, Sony, and Canon ecosystems.

Flare & Bokeh

Flare behavior is one of the Orionโ€™s signatures: like classic CinemaScope glass, they produce strong blue horizontal streak flares, giving a distinct sci-fi or high-style look. Unlike vintage glass, however, flare levels are more controllable, allowing cinematographers to modulate the effect through lighting rather than fighting uncontrolled veiling glare. Bokeh takes on the classic anamorphic oval shape, with pleasing background separation and field curvature that adds dimensionality to the frame.

Image Circle

The native image circle is 31mm diagonal, designed for Super 35 coverage, but Atlas offers 1.4x and 1.6x rear LF Extenders that expands coverage to full-frame sensors like the ARRI Alexa LF, Sony Venice, and RED Monstro.

Cinematic Heritage

Introduced in 2017 by Atlas Lens Co., a young American optics company founded by cinematographers Forrest Schultz and Dan Kanes, the Orions were conceived as a response to the prohibitive cost and scarcity of vintage anamorphic lenses from Panavision, Kowa, or Lomo. Atlas Orions disrupted the lens market by offering a new, complete, and affordable 2x anamorphic system, carving out a niche for independent productions, commercials, and streaming projects, and contributing to the resurgence of anamorphic aesthetics in digital cinema.
