product details
Angénieux’s Optimo 2X Anamorphic Zooms are a three-lens family designed to deliver classic 2.39:1 Scope character with modern precision and portability. The compact pair (30–72mm T4 and 56–152mm T4) each cover the core wide-to-tele ranges for Super 35 production, while the long 42–420mm T4.5 extends the set for wildlife, action, and coverage from a distance. Together they offer a continuous 30–420mm focal span with a 2X squeeze. All three are internal-focus designs with very low geometric distortion and controlled breathing. They deliver high image fidelity that grades flexibly—clean when you need it, with classic anamorphic cues when you want them. Available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

Angénieux Optimo Anamorphic Zooms
Image Fidelity & Focus
Contrast is neutral and consistent, with high resolution across the frame and very smooth tonal transitions. Coatings are tuned for creamy, organic rendering with well-managed veiling flare rather than aggressive streaking. Chromatic aberration is tightly controlled. Sharpness is optimized across the zoom range. The 9-blade irises and 2x squeeze yield oval bokeh and smooth specular highlights, while gentle edge falloff flatters faces without obvious vignetting on S35.
Handling & Adaptability
These are genuinely lightweight anamorphics for steadicam, gimbal, shoulder, and car-rig work. Focus behavior and mechanics are purpose-built for narrative and handheld work: long, precise throws; consistent ring positions; internal focusing to maintain length and balance; and minimal breathing during racks. Encoders in the barrels support metadata via Cooke/i on certain models (notably the 44–420mm), and all three accept standard 0.8-mod motors. The compact pair shares 114 mm fronts. Shared colorimetry makes for seamless intercuts with spherical Optimos and other Angénieux glass.
Flare & Bokeh
Flare is expressive, with horizontal streaks, but controlled by modern coatings. Out-of-focus highlights are rendered with classic oval shapes rather than circular ones, instantly signaling an anamorphic aesthetic, with smooth, creamy textures that avoid harsh edges. At wide apertures, the oval bokeh can stretch noticeably along the vertical axis, enhancing the widescreen cinematic feel.
Image Circle
Designed for Super 35 coverage, with an approximately 28.8 mm image circle.
Cinematic Heritage
Angénieux re-entered the anamorphic market with the 56–152mm around 2013, quickly adding the ultra-compact 30–72mm. In 2016 the long 44–440mm debuted and subsequently evolved into the 42–420mm, completing a trio that spans 30–420mm. The goal was to bring the company’s famed zoom craftsmanship to a modern, compact anamorphic system optimized for digital S35 cameras—a niche that previously relied on primes or heavier vintage zooms. Optimo Anamorphic zooms appear across prestige features and TV, often paired with anamorphic primes.
