product details
This rehoused Angénieux 28–70mm f/2.6 Zoom covers full frame, and has a much more vintage look than modern Angenieux zooms. It flares bigger, and has a more textured bokeh, and as a result, it pairs very well with many of our vintage primes. Regarded as one of the company’s transitional lenses between the classic documentary-era zooms and the modern high-performance Optimos. Covering the critical mid-range focal lengths—wide establishing shots at 28mm through tight portrait-friendly frames at 70mm—it provides cinematographers with versatility, sometimes replacing three or four primes on the set. Its constant f/2.6 aperture gives filmmakers a speed that is unusual for a zoom of its era, while still being compact enough for handheld and Steadicam use. Available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

Angénieux 28-70mm
Image Fidelity & Focus
The 28–70mm is known for smooth, cinematic rendering. Contrast is moderate and never clinical, with a gentle warmth that flatters skin tones. Center sharpness is strong, though there is a natural, aesthetically pleasing softness toward the edges, especially wide open. Focus falloff is graceful, guiding attention without looking harsh or abrupt. Chromatic aberration is modest but visible in high-contrast edges, thanks to its vintage coatings.
Handling & Adaptability
This rehoused and revitalized 28–70mm is lightweight at only 2.8 pounds, with PL mounts, geared focus, zoom and iris rings, a 95mm front, and reinforced mechanics, allowing it to be used on today’s digital cinema cameras with ease. Close focus has been improved to approximately 20 inches.
Flare & Bokeh
In this rehoused version, flares are expressive and bigger, with Angénieux’s characteristic golden veiling glow and multicolored streaks under strong light. Bokeh is textured and notably soft for a zoom, producing rounded highlights and smooth transitions.
Image Circle
This rehoused Angénieux 28–70mm f/2.6 Zoom covers full frame, with a very slight vignette at 28mm on Open Gate FF/VV sensors.
Cinematic Heritage
Developed in the 1980s, the 28–70mm was Angénieux’s answer to the industry’s demand for a mid-range cine zoom that balanced portability and performance – flexibility without the burden of enormous glass. At the time, most productions relied on large 25–250mm zooms or primes. After rehousing, this lens delivers a vintage Angénieux look with practical features.
