The B Speed Uncoated primes are modified versions of the original B Speeds, with coatings removed to enhance flare and reduce contrast. They exaggerate all the character of the standard version of Zeiss B Speeds, and are often chosen for sequences requiring heavy atmosphere, nostalgia, or surrealism, and their imperfections are embraced as expressive tools, turning technical flaws into visual poetry. Zeiss B Speed Uncoated
Image Fidelity & Focus
Without coatings, these lenses produce heavy veiling glow, significantly reduced contrast, and ghosting under bright light. Painterly highlights bloom dramatically, and blacks lift, creating a hazy, nostalgic atmosphere. Sharpness is softer overall, colors are warmer, and aberrations more visible, giving images a vintage, dreamlike quality.
Handling & Adaptability
Mechanically identical to original, coated B Speeds, the uncoated versions are compact and robust. Their unpredictability requires careful lighting but offers unique expressive potential.
Flare & Bokeh
Bokeh is creamy but more chaotic than coated versions, and it sometimes glows, enhancing dreamlike rendering. Flare streaks sometimes cut through highlights.
Image Circle
Like the coated B Speeds, these lenses cover Super 35, making them widely adaptable.
Cinematic Heritage
Rental houses began offering uncoated versions of Zeiss B Speed primes in the 2000s as demand for character lenses grew and cinematographers sought new ways to push vintage looks further.
