product details
Leica R Cinescope Primes โ rehoused by TLS โ adapt classic Leica R still lenses for cinematic use. Leica R lenses of the 1960sโ1990s were some of the finest manual-focus optics ever produced, known for their warm skin tones, surprisingly contemporary flares, and tasteful falloff. TLSโs Cinescope rehousings bring the character of Leica photography glass into cinema with reliable mechanics. They are often chosen for commercials, features, and music videos where a refined, emotional image without clinical sterility is desired. Twelve focal lengths are available: 19mm, 21mm, 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 60mm Macro, 80mm, 90mm, 100mm Macro, 135mm, and 180mm. A Leica R 70-180mm zoom, available separately, further expands creativity. Available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

Image Fidelity & Focus
Leica R lenses are celebrated for their rich, gentle micro-contrast and natural color rendition, and are often described as having a โ3D pop.โ Rendering is crisp yet organic, with a subtle warmth that flatters skin tones. Sharpness is high but never clinical; falloff is graceful and natural, giving subjects dimensional presence. Towards the wider end, they exhibit wonderful center sharpness but still provide some falloff around the edges.
Handling & Adaptability
Industry benchmark TLS rehousing improves close focus and provides cine-standard mechanics: PL mounts, geared focus and iris rings, and uniform housings. Leica R Cinescope Primes are compact compared to many cine primes, making them versatile for handheld and Steadicam work.
Flare & Bokeh
Flares are controlled but elegant and expressive, with Leicaโs signature glow around highlights, and minimal chromatic aberrations. The longer lenses produce spectacularly unique and emotive bokeh.
Image Circle
All 12 lenses have a front diameter of 110mm, and a massive 44mm image circle to cover everything from 16mm to Full Frame, Alexa 35 and Sony Venice II.
Cinematic Heritage
Leica R lenses were originally developed as part of Leicaโs SLR system, parallel to their M-series rangefinders. Built with world-class glass, they developed a cult following among photographers. They were rediscovered in the digital cinema era and became popular for their balance of sharpness and warmth. TLSโs rehousings, introduced in the 2010s, ensured their continued relevance in professional filmmaking.
