product details
Leica M 0.8 prime lenses merge the artistry of Leica stills optics with cinema practicality. Compact yet powerful, sharp yet soulful, they offer filmmakers Leicaโs timeless look and character in a flexible, lightweight professional cine package. Unlike traditional cinema lenses designed from the ground up, the M 0.8 project sought to preserve the compact size, optical personality, and iconic Leica rendering of the M-mount system while modifying mechanics for precise cine use. Cinematographers who seek intimacy and character, especially in handheld or travel-heavy projects, often turn to them. The Leica M 0.8 cine series includes eight focal lengths: 21mm, 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm Noctilux, 50mm, 75mm and 90mm. Available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

Image Fidelity & Focus
Leica M lenses are famed for their micro-contrast and edge acuity. Wide open, the Summilux primes show a blend of sharp subject rendering and gentle edge softness, producing a natural, filmic look. Stopped down, they resolve with extraordinary sharpness. Color reproduction is exceptionally faithful, with a slightly warm tonal balance and remarkable consistency across the set. Skin tones are natural and vibrant, making the lenses attractive for narrative work. Focus falloff is smooth and graceful, with Leicaโs trademark three-dimensional pop. The transition from focus to defocus draws attention to the subject without harshness.
Handling & Adaptability
One of the defining characteristics of the M 0.8 series is its compact form factor. Significantly smaller and lighter than most cinema primes, they range from 320g to 700g. Compactness and full-frame coverage make them highly adaptable across platforms. Front diameters are a consistent 80mm, with 0.8 pitch focus and iris gears integrated. The focus throw is extended to around 300ยฐ, providing precise control compared to the generally shorter throws of stills lenses. Their small size makes them excellent for handheld, gimbal, drone, and Steadicam work. The lenses are available only in their native Leica M mounts, but are compatible with various camera systems through proprietary and third party adapter solutions.
Flare & Bokeh
Thanks to sophisticated aspherical elements and coatings, flares are well controlled, though the Noctilux can produce signature halo effects and ghosting when shot wide open. Chromatic aberration is minimal, particularly in the APO designs (75mm and 90mm). The series excels in out-of-focus rendering. The Noctilux at f/0.95 produces dreamy, swirling bokeh, while Summilux and Summicron lenses yield creamy, rounded highlights.
Image Circle
The M 0.8 lenses cover full-frame 43mm sensors, making them suitable for modern full-frame cinema cameras like the ARRI Alexa LF, Sony VENICE, and RED V-Raptor.
Cinematic Heritage
Developed through a collaboration between Leica Camera AG and CW Sonderoptic (now Leitz Cine), the lenses were introduced in 2016. Leica introduced the M 0.8 project to bring the look of iconic M-series rangefinder lenses โ beloved by photographers for decades โ into cinema. CW Sonderoptic modified the mechanics while preserving Leicaโs optical designs, bringing the signature Leica aesthetic in motion pictures. The โ0.8โ designation refers to the standardized 0.8 pitch gearing on focus and iris rings.
