Image Fidelity & Focus
Never compromising on image quality, Venus Optics keeps their glass sharp without that clinical look many modern lenses struggle with. Precision manufacturing creates edge-to-edge sharpness for the Laowa 8-15mm Fisheye Zoom so that the main effect can take center stage - the line distortion. Utilizing a combination of traditional spherical and innovative aspherical elements, fisheye lenses lean into bending light to create an artistic and emotive distortion that increases towards the edges. Fully zoomed out at 8mm, the lens offers a mindblowing 180 degree field of view. With complex glass element designs, the lens bends light in a controlled and intentional way to keep curvature consistent and yet artistic to create an expressionistic option for cinematographers.
Handling & Adaptability
Despite being an ultra-wide angle fisheye zoom lens with 13 glass elements, the lens still only weighs 1.3 lbs. With a 70 degree focus throw, the lens has enough flexibility for focus pullers while maintaining a compact design. At only 2.46 inches, the lens can fit into the tightest of spaces, maximizing cinematographers ability to capture their vision without compromising the image and saving time on set. Despite its large format capture ability, the front diameter is only 84.8mm, which makes the lens even more compact for dynamic usage. More than any of these features however, is the zoom.
Flare & Bokeh
Venus Optics focuses their attention on precision. Using multi-layered coatings to increase contrast, flares are kept to an absolute minimum to allow the “fisheye” distortion to take center stage. Yet, the complex mixtures that have been embedded into the coatings create only a medium contrast image allowing for versatility in color grading while minimizing flares and halation. Despite the ultra-wide angle, 13 elements and compact design, the lens still has a fast T2.9 iris, that gives flexibility in lighting with controlled chromatic aberrations. With a 9-blade aperture, bokeh is circular, controlled, and yet subtle to allow the line aberrations of the lens to shine.
Image Circle
At 8mm, the lens projects its entire illumination circle onto the capture format. Sometimes, the line distortion is needed, but full coverage of the frame helps keep the audience in the story, making the change from rectilinear to fisheye more subtle. When zoomed into 15mm, the Laowa 8-15mm Fisheye Zoom covers the entire full frame sensors including ARRI Alexa Mini LF, Sony Venice, Red Raptor, Mirrorless cameras, and 8-Perf VistaVision film. This maximizes the cinematographer’s control over their image.
Cinematic Heritage
The Laowa 8-15mm Fisheye Zoom was announced in June of 2025 at the world famous Cine Gear Expo in LA. Fisheye lenses are a complicated combination of glass elements in order to create their renowned effect. Often, some fisheye lenses are designed to cover the entire image circle of a lens while others, which are more well-known, show the entire illumination circle projected onto the capture format into a circular image. Venus Optics decided to create a lens that allowed cinematographers to do both in the same lens. At 8mm, the lens gives that iconic fisheye circle, whereas zoomed all the way in at 15mm, the lens completely covers Full Frame.
