product details
Konica Hexanon primes, rehoused for cinema by Ancient Optics, evoke the vintage charm of Japanese lenses from the 1960s and 70s. These lenses began in that era as highly regarded Konica still photography glass. Known for their gentle, painterly rendering, they are often chosen for narrative projects, fashion, and music videos seeking a nostalgic, filmic texture that balances warmth and imperfection against modern digital clarity. Focal lengths range from 21mm through 135mm, with popular focal lengths such as 28mm, 40mm, 50mm, and 85mm forming the backbone of the series. Available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

Konica Hexanon Prime
Image Fidelity & Focus
Rehoused Konica Hexanon primes produce lower contrast, moderate sharpness, and a smooth roll-off that flatters skin, resulting in a warm, organic look that is excellent for faces. Sharpness is adequate in the center but softens subtly toward the edges, giving a natural vintage vignette. Falloff is smooth. Chromatic aberrations are present, especially wide open, but contribute to their period charm.
Handling & Adaptability
Ancient Optics rehousings transform the still-lens mechanics into robust cine tools with PL mounts, uniform gear positions, and solid mechanics. While heavier than their still-photo versions, they remain compact compared to modern cine primes, which makes them particularly adaptable for handheld, gimbal, or Steadicam use on indie productions.
Flare & Bokeh
Flares are bold, expressive, colorful and organic, with a distinctive pastel glow, often producing veiling glow or rainbow arcs depending on lighting. Bokeh is rounded and creamy, with an occasional touch of swirl at wide apertures, reminiscent of other Japanese optics of the same era.
Image Circle
Rehoused Konica Hexanon primes cover Full Frame sensors.
Cinematic Heritage
Konica was a respected Japanese camera and lens manufacturer, though their Hexanon glass often stood in the shadow of Nikon and Canon. Rediscovered by cinematographers during the vintage lens revival of the 2010s, Hexanons found new life through rehousings, offering a unique Japanese take on vintage optics distinct from Soviet or German glass.
