About the DZO X-Tract Probe Cinema Lens
DZO X-Tract Probe is a macro zoom lens designed for extreme close-up cinematography in confined or hard-to-reach environments. It combines wide-angle perspective with macro-level detail, producing sharp, controlled images while maintaining the depth and spatial context typical of probe lenses.
The lens features an 18-28mm parfocal zoom with a constant T8 aperture, allowing smooth focal adjustments without losing focus. Its slim, elongated design enables access into tight spaces, while multiple viewing configurationsโdirect view, 90ยฐ periscope, and 360ยฐ periscopeโexpand creative positioning. With full-frame compatibility and adaptable mounting options, it supports specialized shots that are not achievable with conventional macro lenses.
Image Fidelity & Focus
Built with 25 elements in 18 groups, including 7 HRI (high-refractive-index) and 6 ED (extra-low dispersion) elements, DZOFilm X-Tract Macro Zoom delivers exceptional sharpness and color correction, minimizing chromatic aberration and warm tint common in probe lenses. Distortion is kept within ยฑ2% across the zoom range, with focus breathing at 24mm. Focus breathing is impressively low โ 0.5% at 24mm, compared to about 39% in comparable lenses. Parfocal design and 300ยฐ focus throw enable smooth, precise focus changes even when zooming.
Flare & Bokeh
Advanced coatings and optical element selection work together to reduce flare and maintain crisp image fidelity. Aberrations are controlled robustly thanks to ED and HRI optics. Although T8 isnโt typically associated with shallow-depth-of-field imagery, this lens still offers softly rendered out-of-focus areas โ especially at 28mm โ thanks to its optical design and diaphragm with 10 iris blades.
Handling & Adaptability
The lens weighs roughly 1.08 to 1.14 kg and measures 41.5 cm (16.3 in) in length. A narrow front diameter (under 30mm) is ideal for probing tight environments. The rear-heavy design balances well on rigs, stabilizers, and motion control systems. Mounted natively in ARRI PL, the short rear protrusion (approximately 1.37 cm) supports adaptability via Speedboosters and mounts like LPL, RF, or E. Designed for seamless integration with cine accessories.
Image Circle
With an image circle of approximately 43.2mm, the X-Tract Macro Zoom is compatible with full-frame sensors and is adaptable to Super 35 formats.
Cinematic Heritage
The probe niche has grown in popularity, particularly for product, sci-fi, and commercial work, prompting DZO to innovate beyond fixed focal probes. DZOFilm introduced the X-Tract in early 2025 as their first probe zoom lens, aiming to combine macro precision with cinematic flexibility.
