Cooke S5/i

Prime - Spherical - Super 35

product details

Cooke S5/i Primes are the result of one of the most ambitious lens projects in Cookeโ€™s long history, designed to push the companyโ€™s legendary โ€œCooke Lookโ€ into the digital era with a blend of warmth, precision, and technological advancement. They offer a faster aperture of T1.4, integrated electronic metadata, and refinements in optical design that addressed the demands of both film and digital cinematography. Where the Mini S4/i primes made the Cooke Look more accessible, the S5/i primes did the opposite: they reaffirmed Cookeโ€™s place at the top, with lenses that combined beauty, technical sophistication, and uncompromising build quality. The full S5/i set covers the spectrum of focal lengths for Super 35 cinematography, including 18mm, 25mm, 32mm, 40mm, 50mm, 65mm, 75mm, 100mm, 135mm and 180mm. Available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

Cooke S5/i

Image Fidelity & Focus

S5/i primes are sharp enough to meet the rigorous resolution demands of modern sensors, but never so sharp as to feel clinical. Their rendering preserves skin tones with a gentle smoothness, while still offering fine detail in textures and fabrics. Contrast is moderate and cinematic, neither too flat nor overly harsh. Highlights roll off with Cookeโ€™s characteristic softness. This tonal balance has made the S5/i particularly well-suited for digital cameras, where they can tame harsh highlights and add warmth to otherwise neutral sensors. Color rendition is warm, flattering, and inviting. Cooke lenses create an image that feels emotional, with subtle golden undertones. Wide open at T1.4, depth of field is extremely shallow, especially at longer focal lengths, but the lenses handle this with grace. Focus falloff is smooth and gradual, creating a dimensional separation between subject and background.

Handling & Adaptability

S5/i lenses are larger and heavier than S4s due to their faster apertures, but Cooke incorporated illuminated focus scales for low-light environmentsโ€”an innovative ergonomic feature. They retain /i technology and standard mechanical design, making them reliable across production environments. The S5/i lenses have long, precise focus throws with well-engineered gearing, making even delicate pulls at T1.4 achievable. Importantly, the lenses are parfocal in design, holding focus reliably throughout their range of motion. This precision makes them a favorite for productions where controlled shallow depth of field is important.

Flare & Bokeh

Flares are cinematic, blooming without overpowering. Chromatic aberrations are minimal, even at T1.4. Bokeh is exceptionally creamy, making these lenses particularly well suited for character-driven cinematography.

Image Circle

The 33.5mm image circle is designed specifically for Super 35 sensors, ensuring full, edge-to-edge coverage without vignetting.

Cinematic Heritage

Introduced in the late 2000s, the S5/i line was built as a premium successor to the acclaimed S4/i primes, and served as Cookeโ€™s flagship set until the full-frame S7/i series arrived. S5/i lenses have been used on countless prestige films and television, including Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) and Mr. Turner (2014).
