Atlas Mercury Lenses

Prime - 1.5x Anamorphic - Full Frame

product details

Atlas Mercury 1.5x Anamorphic lenses are designed to offer the signature widescreen look of anamorphic cinematography in a more compact, lightweight, and full-frameโ€“friendly package. Mercury series was conceived as a companion to the companyโ€™s flagship Orion 2x anamorphics, which provide an affordable gateway to classic 2x anamorphic aesthetics. The Mercuries were created to respond to the rise of full-frame and large-format digital cameras, as well as the growing need for anamorphic lenses that were smaller, lighter, and more adaptable for gimbals, drones, and handheld work. The Mercury lineup is expanding in phases, but the core set includes 36mm T2.2, 42mm T2.2, 54mm T2.2, 72mm T2.2, 98mm T2.2, and 138mm T2.6. Additional wider options (24mm, 27mm, and 32mm) are in development and will be available soon. Each lens features a 1.5x anamorphic squeeze, optimized for full-frame sensors, which produces a 2.39:1 aspect ratio when paired with 16:9 S35 acquisition and a 2.25:1 aspect ratio when paired with 3:2 FF acquisition. Available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

Image Fidelity & Focus

Mercuries strike a balance between vintage character and modern performance. At T2.2 wide open, they exhibit gentle contrast, smooth highlight roll-off, and a subtle softness that flatters faces without feeling hazy. Stopping down tightens sharpness considerably, delivering crisp, detailed imagery that holds up on 6K and 8K sensors. Image fidelity is strong in the center, with pleasing natural falloff toward the edges that enhances subject isolation. Unlike many vintage anamorphics, the Mercuries maintain consistent resolution across the frame, making them well suited for large-format capture. Chromatic aberration is well controlled, with only minimal fringing in extreme contrast situations. Focus breathing is minimal, enabling seamless pulls without image distortion.

Handling & Adaptability

Mercuries are significantly more compact and lighter than the Orions, typically weighing under 1.8 kg per lens, with front diameters standardized at 95mm. Their reduced size makes them excellent for gimbal, steadicam, handheld, and drone workโ€”something difficult to achieve with bulkier 2x anamorphics. They feature robust PL mounts with optional interchangeable EF, RF, or E mounts, ensuring wide adaptability across ARRI, RED, Sony, and Canon systems.

Flare & Bokeh

Flare behavior is one of the Mercury seriesโ€™ key traits. Instead of the intense blue streaks of the Atlas Orions, the Mercuries produce neutral, multicolored flares that vary depending on light sourceโ€”blue, amber, or even rainbow hues. This flexibility allows cinematographers to tailor flare expression to mood and style. Bokeh is distinctly oval due to the 1.5x squeeze, but slightly less exaggerated than 2x anamorphics. The result is a pleasing balanceโ€”cinematic ovals with enough subtlety to avoid distraction.

Image Circle

The 46mm+ image circle ensures full-frame coverage, making the lenses future-proof for large-format digital capture.

Cinematic Heritage

Announced in 2022 and released in early 2023, the Atlas Mercury 1.5x anamorphic lenses extend Atlas Lens Co.โ€™s mission of democratizing anamorphic filmmaking, this time with an eye toward the needs of the digital, full-frame era. Their introduction reflects a turning point in anamorphic lens design, shifting away from purely imitating vintage optics toward building new, purpose-designed tools for digital filmmaking.
