ARRI Zeiss Ultra Primes
Prime - Spherical - Super 35
product details
The ARRI/Zeiss Ultra Prime LDS lenses are cinema primes that deliver sharp, high-contrast images with consistent color reproduction across the full set. Ultra Primes have been respected for decades as one of the most complete and versatile lens lines ever made for 35mm production. A set comprises an impressive 16 focal lengths, ranging from 8mm to 180mm, bringing unmatched flexibility. Not as soft or vintage as some other lens lines, ARRI/Zeiss Ultra Primes deliver clarity and consistency, which adds to their versatility. Their compact size, reliability, optical precision and durability have made them one of the most widely used cine lens families. Available for rental or sub-rental at Cine Visuals.

ARRI Zeiss Ultra Primes
Image Fidelity & Focus
Optically, the Ultra Primes are known for their neutral color reproduction, strong contrast, and consistent image fidelity across the range, with minimal breathing, well-controlled distortion, and a pleasingly gentle roll-off. Focus rendering is sharp but not clinically harsh, with smooth falloff into defocus areas.
Handling & Adaptability
Ultra Prime LDS lenses are designed for consistency, including matched front diameters, uniform gear positions, and robust PL mounts, making them easy to swap quickly on set and compatible with all standard cinema accessories. Focus mechanics are highly refined, with long, smooth throws and virtually no breathing, enabling precise and repeatable focus pulls. Lens Data System (LDS) integration provides critical metadata directly to compatible ARRI cameras, streamlining VFX-heavy productions and on-set data capture.
Flare & Bokeh
Flare control is excellent thanks to Zeissโs advanced coatings, producing clean, contrasty images and subtle highlights even in challenging lighting, while retaining the ability to yield subtle, cinematic veiling when pushed toward strong light sources. Ultra Primes produce bokeh that is neutral and unobtrusive, with rounded, out-of-focus highlights that avoid harsh edges, contributing to a balanced and natural look.
Image Circle
The image circle comfortably covers the Super 35 format. Ultra Primes do not cover full frame without cropping.
Cinematic Heritage
Introduced in the late 1990s and developed through the early 2000s, Ultra Primes became one of the most widely used cine lens systems worldwide, filling the gap between the faster, lower-light Zeiss Super Speeds and the larger, heavier Zeiss Master Primes. A cornerstone of modern cinema optics, Ultra Primes are valued for reliability, precision, and subtle character.
